About Macon Housing Authority

The Macon Housing Authority is a public housing authority chartered under the laws of the State of Georgia in 1938. The Authority is governmental in nature, but is not a part of the general city or county government. MHA uses no local tax revenue in its operation, but derives the majority of its revenue from rents and federal subsidies.

Historically, the Authority is best known for administration of traditional housing programs including the Public Housing and Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) programs. In addition, through the creation of non-profit corporations to develop multi-family housing, special needs housing, and single-family home ownership opportunities, the Authority has ventured into new and exciting areas of housing development and program diversification for which it has received numerous awards for innovative programs and architectural design.

Responsible for a 2008 budget in excess of $42.3 million, the Authority operates in a professional and ethical fashion to ensure the success of its numerous programs. Funding sources include the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, rental income, grant awards, bond issues, and tax credit investments. As the largest provider of affordable housing in Macon, MHA has extensive experience in the development, renovation, and management of residential rental property.

However, it takes more than bricks and mortar or funding to help people make a home. Macon Housing Authority unites housing, people, and services to assist residents in building their neighborhoods and communities. MHA has been designated a HUD “High Performer” agency every year since 1997, when HUD first awarded the designation. Earning this title confirms our commitment to serving as responsible stewards of public resources while providing decent, safe and affordable housing to those in need.

Mission Statement

The mission of Macon Housing Authority is to add value to our community and the lives of those we serve through quality housing, support services, and community development.
